Health
GMO (genetically modified organism) refers to an item that has been altered from its original state by genetic engineering techniques. No commercially grown oats, including Coach’s Oats, have been genetically modified. Oats grown for commercial use have six chromosomes, which makes the hexaploid grain difficult to genetically modify. Therefore, even if a GMO plant/grain is grown next to a field of oats, the GMO grain will not cross-pollinate with the oats.
Oats are naturally gluten-free. However, a tiny amount of other grains that do contain gluten—wheat, rye or barley—may be present in the oat groats purchased and milled into Coach’s Oats. In addition, Coach’s Oats is not milled on gluten-free equipment; this can slightly increase the possibility of exposure. Another consideration is oats contain proteins, or amino acid sequences, that are similar enough to those found in gluten to possibly cause a reaction. Sensitivity to gluten varies from person to person. We recommend that people with gluten sensitivities consult a healthcare professional for guidance when considering cereal-based foods.
In order to receive USDA Organic Certification, our organic oats are required to be grown without the use of glyphosate.
Because they are a natural agricultural product, oats can have slight variances in their properties. Each crop, growing season and harvest is different. Therefore, one crop may have a few more husks or hulls than another. Coach’s Oats uses the latest tools and technologies to eliminate as many of them as possible. Our suppliers adhere to the tightest cleanliness standards in the oat industry. Please be aware that hulls and husks are natural plant material and safe to consume. If you notice a few dark specks in your Coach’s Oats, nearly all of them are oats that darken during a kiln drying process. This is common to products going through this step, and while our stringent controls keep the number to a minimum, they are safe to consume.
The glycemic index rates carbohydrate foods on how quickly they increase blood glucose levels 2-3 hours after they are eaten. Coach’s Oats was laboratory tested in an in vitro study and found to have an estimated glycemic index of 50, using glucose as a reference. This is considered in the midrange of foods. For comparison, rolled oats have a glycemic index of 57, a plain bagel is 72 and white toast is 75.
Oats are called a “superfood” because of the many ways they contribute to good health. Studies show they help lower cholesterol, promote healthy arteries and control blood pressure. Coach’s Oats is a good option for diabetics because it does not spike blood sugar levels as do instant or rolled oats. As a whole grain, Coach’s Oats aids the immune system. It also contains Beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that has been shown to suppress appetite and help promote gut health.
